week 1 videos

Video 1 - President Barrack Obama

The first video is of President Obama giving a wonderful speech to the city of Cairo. It is a message that is sent to show that Americans and those in the Muslim world can not only co-exist, but have mutual respect for each other. So much of what he has said about the history of Islam is new to me, the advancements and technology that they have brought to the world, everything from Algebra to diseases being treated. I love how President Obama brings up the history of the United States and shows facts that many people never knew. He brings up the great fact about how the US congress now has a Muslim member, and that person swore an oath to protect, and even though he may have different views, he is human just like everyone else.
I think its a magnificent speech, and it is one that many more people need to view. It's very easy for young people to just pass on a speech that is being given. I know I would have if not for this class. But I really did enjoy it and will now pay more attention to when our President speaks.

Video 2 -

One of the most famous women on the planet, Oprah Winfrey was the speaker at Duke University
commencement. It was a great speech, and like most others the thing that stood out the most was the part when she told the story of the woman who had the bacteria infection and had to get her limbs amputated, and really didn't feel sorry for herself. She had young children, and was so quick to say "I need to get back home to take care of my girls". She didn't care that she had this thing that was demoralizing, and something that could really put you in a depressed state. Powerful guest. Powerful story. As a person, I think Oprah is an amazing person. I know she does a tremendous amount for charity, she seems to always be doing something for others, I wish I could have the opportunity to be such a great person.
